2018 EdTech Year End Review

Last year we discussed how the high demand for talent was increasing the pressure on hiring managers. As we enter into 2019 we see this trend continuing: there is still pressure to attract and close the best talent and candidates are again being presented multiple offers, making the market much more competitive.

As we enter the New Year here are our Top 5 Ed Tech recruiting trends to look out for in 2019.

Huge uptick in sizable hiring expansions in Q4 (2019 will be a significant growth year):

As the year comes to an end, we see a considerable uptick in large-scale team expansions. This indicates that 2019 budgets have just been approved and many companies are investing in human capital going into 2019, possibly even more than we have seen in years. This growth trend in education will continue to increase dramatically and will add accumulating pressure on talent pipelines.

Increase in STEM companies hiring:

More and more international companies are looking to expand into the US, taking advantage of the vast STEM education opportunity here. From learning centers with science labs for the consumer market, to virtual reality in the classroom, there is still a massive opportunity for growth in these markets.

EdTech-SaaS is now the new norm:

Now that the SaaS model has infiltrated thoroughly into the Ed Tech space we see that almost all on-premise software has switched over to SaaS.  The switch in strategy has taken many years, but it is essential to note when hiring new customer-facing talent in 2019.

Hiring Leaders from other industries creates tremendous opportunity:

As the Education market grows, there is a limited supply of talent who have experience in the industry.  The only way for growth directed companies to hire all the people needed is to take people from other sectors. Recruiting the best industry-agnostic “athlete” can usually bring new and fresh ideas to an industry.

International Expansion:

Both companies entering US markets and US companies expanding outside have become the norm.  Most of the clients we work with, even small startup companies, are working across borders to bring their solutions to classrooms worldwide.

For 2019, consider developing and future proofing your employees, analyze how to increase the candidate talent pool, and continue to review and develop your hiring process to complement your growth goals.
